No holiday displays this season at the Illinois Capitol due to ongoing construction

Ongoing construction at the Illinois Capitol is the reason given for the Rotunda taking the year off from having the tree, the Nativity, the menorah, and all the rest. (Dave Dahl/WJBC)

SPRINGFIELD – If you stand in the state Capitol Rotunda to ponder the meaning of the season – whatever your season – you’ll have to use your imagination this year.

The customary holiday displays are taking the year off because of ongoing construction in and around the statehouse. The secretary of state’s office has jurisdiction over the Capitol, and a spokeswoman for that office says the decision was made in conjunction with the Office of the Architect of the Capitol. The Rotunda itself is not part of the project, but the space is more cramped this year because the north wing is walled off.

Rabbi Meir Moscowitz of the group responsible for the annual menorah display, Lubavich Chabad of Illinois, does not sound as if the one-year absence has thrown him.

“We’re definitely going to put up the menorah somewhere – not sure yet where. Every year we put more and more menorahs. It’s like the holiday itself: every night, you light one more candle.”

He suggested the new and improved Capitol will mean a new and improved menorah in 2024.

The rules apply to all, so the same goes for the holiday tree, Nativity, Freethatdom from Religion Foundation message, Satanic Temple statue, and – that one year, anyway – a Festivus pole.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

If there had been a parade, this year’s Labor Day theme was to be “150 years of struggle: your right to vote.” …

Is federal mobilization the answer?

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
