ISU Professor facing four counts of predatory criminal sexual assault

NORMAL – A long investigation by the Bloomington Police Department Criminal Investigation Division led to the arrest of an Illinois State University Professor on Wednesday.

Alan Bates, 52, is the Director of I-S-U’s School of Teaching and Learning. He faces four counts of predatory criminal sexual assault.

Authorities say the counts involve a victim who was under 13 years old.

ISU is aware of the arrest and charges against Bates, and the university has received no information suggesting the charges are connected to his employment at ISU.

As a matter of course, the university does not comment on personnel matters of individual employees.

“Illinois State University is aware of the arrest and charges against Alan Bates. The university has received no information as of this time suggesting the charges are connected to his employment at Illinois State.  As a matter of course, the university does not comment on personnel matters of individual employees,” said the University’s spokesperson Eric Jome.

Bates’ bond has been set at $1 million.
