Gov. Pritzker accused of gamesmanship

SPRINGFIELD – Illinois Senate Democrats say the governor is within the bounds of the rules by withdrawing Prisoner Review Board nominees before a deadline, then renominating the same people so as to start a new clock – and avoid questions from Republicans on a confirmation committee.

Republicans use a different word: “A shady tactic is being utilized right now,” said State Sen. Steve McClure (R-Springfield), “that is not allowing the senate fulfill one of its essential obligations. As members of the Senate Executive Appointments Committee, we are appalled by the procedural maneuver Gov. Pritzker is using to allow his appointees on the Prisoner Review Board to continue to serve without being confirmed by the Illinois Senate.”

McClure appeared at a Capitol news conference with two fellow Republicans on that committee. Sen. Jason Plummer (R-Edwardsville) said he has expressed his concern to the committee chair, out loud in committee, and on the Senate floor to no avail. State Sen, Terri Bryant (R-Murphysboro) says she cannot get a meeting with the governor.

Senate Democrats affirmed the tactic is within the rules, but neither that caucus nor the governor’s office would explain why the nominations are being withdrawn and resubmitted.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

If there had been a parade, this year’s Labor Day theme was to be “150 years of struggle: your right to vote.” …

Is federal mobilization the answer?

Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
