BLOOMINGTON – Students are slowly returning to the classroom in McLean County amid the COVID-19 pandemic, which means increased traffic around school zones.

Normal Police Public Information Officer Brad Park told WJBC’s Marc Strauss while it’s nice to see students return to in-person learning, he’s reminding families to use caution when driving around school zones.

“The most important thing in my mind is all of our kid’s safety, are our kids going back to school…It kind of brings life back to the community when you see, (and) you know parents lined up to get their kids back to school… It’s one of those things that we just want to make sure all the kids are safe. The buses are going to be out there driving slowly and very cautiously through school zones.”

Park said as the weather warms up, more students would be riding their bikes and walking to school, and drivers should always be on the lookout.

“We can always pray for warmer weather that maybe some kids be riding their bikes or walking to and from school, so just definitely be aware of that. We don’t want any kid anybody getting hurt going to and from school, obviously.”

Students in Unit 5 are in the classroom twice a week with the other days online, while students in District 87 had an option of in-person or online learning.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

If there had been a parade, this year’s Labor Day theme was to be “150 years of struggle: your right to vote.” …

Is federal mobilization the answer?

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
