NORMAL – The town of Normal will start collecting one-percent more in sales tax starting Jan. 1, but what that revenue will be spent on is still up in the air.

Some members of the Normal Town Council have expressed interest in using the money to fund a new soccer complex. Normal City Manager Mark Peterson told WJBC’s Dan Swaney the idea shouldn’t be written off.

“As we reach out and try to attract new investment and new jobs and businesses here, those are things companies look for,” Peterson said. “So I wouldn’t consider it just a want. Now, it’s not the highest priority that we have, but I think at some point as a community we need to address that issue.”

Bloomington also passed a one-percent sales tax increase and is going to use 75 percent of the new revenue for road resurfacing and its structural deficit.

The Normal Town Council will meet Oct. 5 to figure out what it will do with the revenue it receives from the sales tax increase.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
