School threat not linked to Bloomington High School

Bloomington High School

A threat circulating on social media that stated someone was going to shoot up ‘BHS” caused some confusion in District 87 Friday morning.

Talking with WJBC’s Scott Laughlin, District 87 Superintendent Dr. Barry Reilly, said Bloomington High School was notified of the posting Thursday night.

“The post stated ‘BHS’ and people who see that here will immediately assume that’s Bloomington High School. That launched an investigation and it turned out it was Bastrop High School in Louisiana”

Reilly said because of the speed that things spread through social media they had to be prepared

“We had to gather our resources to get ready this morning to make sure that we’re alerting our parents and our students at Bloomington High school to assure them that it’s not related to our school at all. Just to be sure that they know that they’re kids are safe and out day will go on as normally scheduled.”

The Bastrop Police Department along with the Morehouse Parish Sheriffs Office in Louisiana have arrested 18-year-old Tyina Rowden for terrorizing threats.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
