BLOOMINGTON – Local heroes are not identified by capes, so the American Red Cross Serving Central Illinois wants you to point them out so they can be recognized.

The organization is taking nominations for the 2018 Central Illinois Heroes Awards. Coleen Moore of the Red Cross said the program has a new category related to one of the Red Cross’s core functions.

“Blood donors, people who may do blood drives, or someone received blood from the Red Cross and received an impact on their life,” Coleen Moore of the Red Cross suggested to WJBC’s Marc Strauss.

Several categories will be recognized during the annual ceremony in early November.

“We’re looking for nominations for health and safety that’s related to someone perfoming CPR or first aid to help an individual, and we’re looking for individuals or even groups,” Moore added.

Lifesavers and difference-makers in the public and private sector are being sought.

“Our public service hero is where someone in the public service has gone above and beyond their call of duty,” Moore said. “The one that we tend to have the most difficult time is for youth volunteers, where those under the age of 18 have gone above and beyond to help another human being.”

Information and nomination forms are at redcross.org/centralillinoisheroes. Deadline is August 31.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

Is federal mobilization the answer?

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
