For members of the transgender community, finding access to proper healthcare can be a monumental endeavor.

The YWCA of McLean County did their part in easing these barriers Wednesday night by hosting a “Health for All” fundraiser at The Bistro in downtown Bloomington.

Director of Mission Impact at YWCA McLean County Jenn Carrillo said transgender individuals without the means to travel to large metro areas often find themselves in a difficult position.

“People who aren’t able to travel to major cities like Chicago or St. Louis are not able to get the hormone therapy that they need.  So there is a big need because there just isn’t anyone covering those folks in central Illinois,” she said.

Proceeds from the fundraiser helped benefit the Bloomington-based Central Illinois Pride Health Center; whose mission is mission is to promote the health and wellbeing of the LGBTQ community in central Illinois.

CIPHC Executive Director Len Meyer said something as simple as visiting a doctor can sometimes be a troubling experience for transgender individuals.

“As a transgender individual, you have to explain why your birth gender doesn’t match your gender identity,” Meyer said. “So when you identify as masculine and go to a doctor and they call you by your female name you were born with, it really doesn’t make you feel good about going to see the doctor.”

They added that stigmas attached to the LGBTQ community can cause transgender individuals to avoid regular wellness checks, which can lead to serious health complications.

Dontae Latson, President and CEO of YWCA McLean County, said it’s essential that people from all walks of life make efforts to embrace the LGBTQ community.

“I may not ever feel or know what it’s like to be anything other than a straight cis-male,” he said. “But it is incumbent upon me to listen and open up. At the end of the day, we’re all human beings. We care about each other and we love each other.”

The Bistro pledged to donate a significant portion of their proceeds during Wednesday night’s event to the Bloomington-based LGBTQ health advocacy group.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

By Mike Matejka Because of COVID, there is no Labor Day Parade this year.  It’s always a great event for our everyday workers to march proudly down the street and enjoys the festive crowd. If there had been a parade, this year’s Labor Day theme was to be “150 years of struggle: your right to vote.” …

Is federal mobilization the answer?

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
