BLOOMINGTON – The mumps virus in McLean County continues to spread.

The McLean County Health Department says there are now 10 cases of mumps in the county, with three other probable cases. The department said last week it was tracking six cases of mumps. Communicable Disease Supervisor Melissa Graven said most of the cases are related to the Illinois State University campus.

“We’re really targeting all of our efforts and working with the Student Health Services there to keep and eye out, keeping active on mumps surveillance,” said Graven. “Asking that any of the students, or any faculty, on that campus go to Student Health Services if they start feeling ill.”

Graven explained the best way to avoid contracting the virus is to ensure you’ve received two doses of the mumps vaccine.

“If you start feeling ill, or know of a roommate or one of your friends that had the mumps and you start feeling similar symptoms, isolate yourself; try not to come in contact with anybody,” she said.

The health department said mumps is spread from through droplets of saliva or mucus from the mouth, nose, or throat of an infected person. This usually occurs when the person coughs, sneezes or talks.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

If there had been a parade, this year’s Labor Day theme was to be “150 years of struggle: your right to vote.” …

Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
