Ann SanderAnn Sander

Ann Pauline Sander, 75, of Normal, died peacefully, surrounded by her family at 11:55 p.m. on Jan. 17 at Heritage Health in Normal.

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. on Thursday at Carmody-Flynn Funeral Home, Bloomington, where visitation will be one hour prior to services.   Cremation rites have been accorded.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Humane Society of Central Illinois, 423 Kays Drive, Normal 61761.  A private interment will be held at a later date.  To express condolences online, please visit www.carmodyflynn.com.

Ann was born March 23, 1940 in Lockport, N.Y., daughter of Carl J. and Bessie M. Damude Sander.

Surviving are her sister, Marilyn (Wayne) Ericson of Bloomington; two nephews, Bryan (Ellen) Ericson of Mahomet, IL and Brent (Jennifer) Ericson of Fairfax, Va. and great-niece, Hannah and great-nephews, Owen and William.  Also surviving are her life-long friend, Mary (Ben) Chi of Sunnyvale, Calif. and their children and grandchildren, Dani (Mike Roberts) Chi, Tonja (Russ Biswell) Chi, Renee (Christopher Watkins) Chi and Greta, Livia and Torrey.

Ann lived in Niagra Falls, N.Y. for 15 years, and then moved to Northfield, MN where she graduated from Northfield High School in 1958 and later from St. Olaf College with a Bachelor’s Degree of Science in Nursing.  After graduation, she worked at Stanford University Hospital and last worked at El Camino Hospital in Mountain View, Calif.  Ten years ago, Ann moved to Normal to be with her sister and family.

Those that she leaves behind will remember her as carefree and having a great sense of humor.  She loved people, children and animals, especially her cats.   Ann always enjoyed good food and laughter.   She also was a devout Christian and would often share her faith with friends and family.

Katha SpurgeonOtis Hurt

Otis J. “Pops” Hurt, 82, of Fairbury, passed away at 9:30 a.m., Jan. 17 at Piper City Nursing Home.

His funeral will be held at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday at Duffy-Pils Memorial Home, Fairbury. Pastor Steve Anderson will be officiating. Burial will be in South Graceland Cemetery, Fairbury.

His visitation will be held one hour prior to the services on Wednesday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to the J. A. Fowell American Legion Post #174, Forrest.

Otis was born Feb. 16, 1933 in Fairbury the son of Otis M. and Nola Ray Hurt. He married Carol J. Dickman on May 31, 1957. She died Jan. 10, 2002.

Surviving are his daughter, Cindy (John Shilts) Hurt of Fairbury; son, Todd (Kris) Hurt of Saunemin; grandchildren, Kevin (Sara) Hurt, Veronica and Valerie Hurt; great-grandchildren, Jude, Maxwell and McKinzie Hurt.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and four sisters.

Otis is a veteran of the United States Air Force.

Otis worked for the City of Fairbury and Forrest Milk Products. He owned and operated Pop’s Bar in Forrest and worked road construction for the Local Labor Union.

He was a member of the Laborers Union, Roanoke and the J. A. Fowell American Legion Post #174, Forrest.

In his younger days Otis was an avid hunter and fisherman.

Katha Spurgeon

Katha L Spurgeon, 61, of Chenoa, formerly of Lexington, passed away at 7:56 p.m. on Jan. 12 at Meadows Mennonite Nursing Home in Meadows.

Cremation rites have been accorded. Her memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday at Church of Christ Uniting in Lexington with Rev. Jan Proeber officiating.

Memorials may be made to the family. Kibler-Brady-Ruestman Memorial Home in Bloomington is assisting the family with arrangements.

Katha was born on May 8, 1954 in Bloomington, daughter of George L. and Mary J Hinthorn Lane.

Surviving are two daughters, Rebecca (Matthew Anderson) Lane of Lexington, Melissa Theel of Bloomington; two sons, Christopher Eft of Bloomington, John Lane of Lexington; two sisters, Mary (Phil) Breckling of Crosby, Texas, Jan Carr of Galesburg; one brother, Robert (Cheryl) Brando of Loral, MS; and 11 grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Katha was employed as a cashier and waitress.

She enjoyed painting, drawing, arts and crafts, music, road trips, horses, and walking on the beach.
