NORMAL – The Illinois State football team added another potential option to its passing attack on offense Monday, when head coach Brock Spack announced the addition of Boston College wide receiver Chase Pankey to the roster.

Pankey redshirted at Boston College during the 2015 season and will have four years of eligibility remaining with the Redbirds.  The 6-foot-2 speedster will be eligible to play immediately for ISU in 2016 due to FCS transfer rules.

“Chase is a very fast and athletic outside receiver who comes from a great high school program in Cincinnati,” Spack stated.  “His coaches were very high on him and he wanted to get more involved in a passing offense.  We think he will fit into our system well and excited to have him join our football program.”

The Cincinnati, Ohio, native was a three-star recruit coming out Archbishop Moeller and received interest from several FBS programs before landing at Boston College.  During his prep career, Pankey was part of the Crusaders’ teams that won two state championships and earned a third title bid, losing in the finals in 2014.  That season, he recorded 551 yards on 30 receptions and scored nine touchdowns despite missing several games due to an injury.  Pankey also earned Second-Team Greater Catholic League All-Star honors in 2013.

Pankey joins a deep group of wide receivers for the Redbirds, which is led by third-team All-American Anthony Warrum and key returners Christian Gibbs, Anthony Fowler, Jon-Marc Anderson and Bryce Jefferson.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

By Mike Matejka Because of COVID, there is no Labor Day Parade this year.  It’s always a great event for our everyday workers to march proudly down the street and enjoys the festive crowd. If there had been a parade, this year’s Labor Day theme was to be “150 years of struggle: your right to vote.” …

Is federal mobilization the answer?

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
