BLOOMINGTON – A Bloomington man is eligible for an extended sentence of up to 30-years in prison after a jury convicted him in a burglary case that garnered plenty of public attention, McLean County’s chief prosecutor said Thursday.
31-year old Andray Alexander was one of three people arrested in October of 2015 during an investigation of a string of home break-ins. Police captured an accomplice who reportedly tried to strike a detective while speeding off in a Jeep Cherokee. That vehicle crashed into an apartment building at The Ponds on G.E. Road, and the detective was treated and released from a local hospital.
The McLean County jury found Alexander guilty on two counts of residential burglary and one count of possessing burglary tools. The state’s attorney says Alexander faces up to 30-years in prison because of prior convictions for residential burglary, intimidation, aggravated battery, and criminal sexual abuse.
In a news release, State’s Attorney Jason Chambers praised police and a witness who helped solve the case.
“The officers involved had to make several snap decisions and did so in a manner which did not result in any serious injuries to anyone involved,” said Chambers. “It should also be mentioned that without the call from a responsible and concerned member of the public who saw suspicious activity occurring, this crime would not have been stopped,”Chambers also said.
Alexander’s sentencing is set for May 30th.
