Surviving are his wife of Bloomington; two daughters, Leah “Sis” Hoeniges of Chicago and Katie “Kate” Hoeniges of Bloomington; seven siblings, Martin (Mildred) Hoeniges of Bloomington, Richard (Gloria) Hoeniges of Bloomington, Florence (E. Michael) Walsh of Bloomington, Marie Evans of Bloomington, Andrew Hoeniges of El Paso, Patricia (Dan) Richardson of Friant, Calif. and Elizabeth (Dale) Kindred of Atlanta; parents-in-law, Thomas and Jean Marshall of Bloomington; sisters-in-law, Teresa (William) Rouse of Carlock and Donna (Jacob) Gunter of Oak Park; brother-in-law, Michael (Renee) Marshall of Morton; 36 nieces and nephews; a special former sister-in-law, Loretta (Isy) Hoomanawanui of Bloomington; his beloved dog, Meena; and a host of extended family members.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

John, widely known as “Coach,” enjoyed many years of coaching basketball and softball.  He was a longtime faithful member of St. Mary’s Church in Bloomington and an avid supporter of Central Catholic High School football.  He enjoyed having cookouts for the neighborhood, fishing, gardening and, more often than not, a dinner consisting of pepperoni pizza cooked WELL DONE.

Although home was John’s favorite place, he would be the first to drop everything to help someone in need.

From everyone who ever had the honor of being in your presence, you will be immensely missed.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

By Mike Matejka Because of COVID, there is no Labor Day Parade this year.  It’s always a great event for our everyday workers to march proudly down the street and enjoys the festive crowd. Is federal mobilization the answer?

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
