Chiefs hit hard in loss to Kernels

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – The Peoria Chiefs fell behind big before cutting the deficit in half in an 8-4 loss to the Cedar Rapids Kernels Monday night. The loss prevents the Chiefs from winning three straight road games for the first time since early June and drops them to 61-52 on the season.

The Chiefs started the game with consecutive walks but didn’t make Sam Gibbons pay as they left runners on the corners. Cedar Rapids loaded the bases in the bottom of the inning against Jake Woodford with a one-out walk and two singles. Nelson Molina put the hosts on top 1-0 with a sacrifice fly to left before Woodford got out of the inning.

Peoria loaded the bases in the second but again failed to score. Cedar Rapids threatened in the second and added to their lead in the third. Molina started a two-out rally with a walk, Jaylin Davis doubled to left and JJ Fernandez walked to load the bases. Rainis Silva singled to left and Molina scored but Matt Davis threw out Jaylin Davis at the plate to end the inning.

Steven Gallardo took over in the fourth and Cedar Rapids doubled their lead. Christian Cavaness doubled and with one out a single by Christian Ibarra put the Kernels up 3-0. Luis Arraez doubled home Ibarra for a 4-0 lead. Gallardo gave up a double and a RBI single in the fifth before leaving the game with an injury. Davis Ward took over with one out and allowed two doubles and a single as the Kernels pushed the lead to 8-0.

The Chiefs finally got on the board in the sixth against Gibbons. Eli Alvarez reached on an error at second base and scored on a double to center from Brian O’Keefe. Chris Chinea singled and O’Keefe scored on a double play to cut the lead to 8-2. Peoria finished the scoring in the eight when Chinea hit a long two-run homer off Logan Lambana, his fifth of the season.

Woodford (4-5) took the loss allowing two runs on five hits over three innings. He walked four and struck out three. Gallardo allowed four runs on five hits over 1 1/3 innings. Ward allowed two runs on five hits while striking three over 2 1/3 innings. Tyler Bray allowed two hits and struck out two over 1 1/3 shutout innings.
