BELOIT, Wisc.- The Peoria Chiefs allowed six runs for the second game in a row and lost to the Beloit Snappers 6-4 Monday night in the opening game of a four-game series. The loss drops the Chiefs to 2-3 in the second half and 42-33 overall.

With two outs in the third inning the Snappers got a rally going against Chiefs starter Sandy Alcantara. Trace Loehr drew a four-pitch walk and Trent Gilbert singled to right. Brett Siddall doubled off the top of the right field wall for a 2-0 Snappers lead.

The Chiefs came right back in the fourth inning against James Naile. Edmundo Sosa singled with one out and Eli Alvarez beat out a grounder that was ruled an error on Edwin Diaz at third base. With runners on second and third, Brian O’Keefe hit an infield single back to the mound as Sosa scored to cut the lead to 2-1. Alvarez came home on a groundout by Chris Chinea to tie the game before Naile got out of the inning.

Beloit regained their lead in the bottom of the inning. Justin Higley led off with a single off Alcantara’s foot and Ryan Howell launched a two-run homer to left-center for a 4-2 Beloit lead. The Snappers grabbed an unearned run against the Chiefs in the fifth inning after a double, a passed ball and a sacrifice fly. The hosts made it 6-2 with a run against reliever Luke Harrison in the seventh.

The Chiefs rallied in the ninth against reliever Dustin Driver. Sosa led off with a single and moved to second on a groundout. O’Keefe singled to center and Sosa scored on a wild pitch to cut the lead to 6-3. Chinea singled to put runners on the corners and Vaughn Bryan hit a groundball to shortstop. O’Keefe scored as the Snappers forced out Chinea at second and threw wild to first base. Bryan was tagged out between first and second to end the game as he attempted to advance on the errant throw.

Alcantara (5-4) took the loss allowing five runs, four earned, on six hits over five innings. He walked four, struck out five and allowed a home run. Harrison allowed one run on two hits over two innings with two strikeouts. Tyler Bray walked a batter and hit a batter with a strikeout over a scoreless inning.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

By Mike Matejka Because of COVID, there is no Labor Day Parade this year.  It’s always a great event for our everyday workers to march proudly down the street and enjoys the festive crowd. If there had been a parade, this year’s Labor Day theme was to be “150 years of struggle: your right to vote.” …

Is federal mobilization the answer?

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
