BLOOMINGTON – If you have an appreciation for downtown Bloomington, or at least know your way around, you could be an ambassador.

The Downtown Bloomington Association is looking for ambassadors who will be stationed throughout the district when downtown during special events.

Ambassador Coordinator Michele Pugh, who recently moved to a loft apartment downtown, said those special events can be concerts, games, the monthly First Friday promotion and the Route 66 visitors center which is set to open this spring.

"You'll be seeing us in bright neon t-shirts on First Fridays, there's a lot going on First Fridays, directing people,  welcoming people to downtown, letting them know all of the things that are going on," Pugh said.

"There's the Farmers Market, lots of cultural actives going on," Pugh said. "We want to be here to help wayfinding, directing people to good places to eat and lots of family activities as well."

Pugh said the group has about 10 volunteers so far. DBA has scheduled a meeting Tuesday night at 6:30 at the Bistro, 316 N. Main St., to see who might be willing to help.

"There's a perception that people just don't realize what's all here in downtown," Pugh said. "Uptown (Normal) is getting a lot of focus and now we are saying there there's so much history here."

Is federal mobilization the answer?

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
