WASHINGTON – U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin said foreign visitors should be subject to fingerprinting when they come to the United States.
Durbin told WJBC’s Scott Laughlin the U.S. sees 70 million visitors each year including 1.5 million that come through O’Hare Airport and 20 million are from the 38 countries that don’t require visas because of the U.S. via waiver program.
He said anyone with or without a visa should be screened in such a manner before they board a flight.
“I think we live in a different world. We need to make sure we are doing everything we can to protect America and to stop terrorism around the world,” Durbin said.
Durbin said this is a more effective way to root out terrorism than banning Syrian refugees. He also pushed for a ban on those on no-fly lists from buying firearms. He dismissed concerns from critics that a watch list would be used to indiscriminately keep people from buying a weapon.
The Obama administration is pressuring tech companies to help fight the terrorists use of social media. Durbin backs the move. He said social media has become a recruiting tool for terrorists.
“We ought to inspect social media, the people who run Facebook and Twitter and all the rest of these to have some responsibility to stop the recruitments efforts of jihads who are going to kill Americans and to stop this promulgation of information that they use to make bombs and kill innocent people,” Durbin said.
Durbin said he met with the FBI after the San Bernardino shootings and officials told him that instructions to build a pipe bomb can easily be found online. Investigators found 12 pipe bombs at the home of the killers.
