CHICAGO – Republican Gov.-elect Bruce Rauner says a longtime aide to late Comptroller Judy Baar Topinka should take over the job.
Topinka died Wednesday after suffering complications from a stroke.
By law, Gov. Pat Quinn can appoint a successor if a constitutional office becomes vacant. But Quinn leaves office next month and could decide not to make a permanent appointment. He told reporters it's too early to discuss succession plans and he'll be guided by the state's Constitution.
However, Rauner said Wednesday that Nancy Kimme would be a good choice. She is also member of Rauner's transition team.
Rauner says Quinn should appoint Kimme to the post immediately. He says she knows the system so the voters have continuity. He says a replacement for the four-year term can be chosen later.
