SPRINGFIELD – The unemployment rate is down in Illinois, but so is the number of available jobs.

The August jobless figure is down to 5.6 percent, but the number of non-farm payroll jobs dropped 900 from July. Ron Payne is with the Illinois Department of Employment Security, and said July turned out to be not as rosy as first announced.

“July data has been revised. It was originally a slight gain in employment,” said Payne. “It’s also been revised down to a loss. This is the third month in a row the state has actually lost jobhs. Minor losses, but nonetheless, losses.”

Construction, manufacturing, and financial activities jobs were the biggest decliners, largely offset by large gains in areas like educational and health services, and professional and business services.

In the first six months of the year, Payne said employment grew at a rate of 0.3 percent– half the rate of the rest of the Midwest. He said there’s not much that can be done to change that aside from helping more people find work.

“That, and expanding our efforts to try to attract more businesses to Illinois in a really touch economic environment,” said Payme. “Many other states, when somebody announces they’re going to build a new plant somewhere, the competition is very fierce.”

Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
