BLOOMINGTON, Ill. (WMBD) — If you have questions and/or want answers about the proposed shelter village in Bloomington, now is your chance to learn more.

Two upcoming public forums, Friday at 3 p.m. and Monday at 7 p.m. at the Bloomington Public Library, will give residents of the twin cities more information about the shelter village proposed by Home Sweet Home Ministries’ (HSHM).

“Being very clear about why we’re doing what we’re proposing to do and what it’s going to accomplish is especially important for us as we seek to provide those services, and really to talk about how we think about providing these services,” said CEO Matt Burgess.

The non-profit’s plan is to purchase property off of Main Street and Oakland Avenue, which is owned by Connect Transit, to develop a private shelter program.

“We are focusing on reaching people who are stuck outside, who are unable to access or be successful within our existing traditional shelter system,” Burgess said.

The overall cost of the project is around $2.5 million. Home Sweet Home requested $1.34 million from McLean County, with the rest being paid through donations and funds HSH Ministries has, Burgess said in March.

Burgess said the last part of the deal was just acquiring the property.
