SPRINGFIELD – The Illinois Board of Higher Education (IBHE) says Thursday’s U.S. Supreme Court ruling is a step backwards for racial equity at colleges and universities.
The court overturned affirmative action, ruling that race can’t be a specific consideration in the college admissions process.
IBHE board spokesperson Jose Garcia says they are disappointed in the decision but that they will continue to fight for equity.
“Families here in Illinois can rest assured that we will be doing everything possible to ensure our higher education system is an equitable one,” said Garcia.
In a statement, Gov. JB Pritzker called the decision a travesty that reverses 45 years of precedent in increasing racial equity in higher education.
