BLOOMINGTON – According to McLean County’s top health official, most new cases of COVID-19 are from unvaccinated people.
Data compiled by the McLean County health department identifies 56.25% of the county’s population are fully vaccinated, trailing the statewide total of 58.08%.
“The majority of the cases that we are seeing, the majority of hospitalizations we’re seeing are amongst the unvaccinated. When I say the majority, I mean 80-90%,” Jessica McKnight, MCHD Administrator, told WJBC’s, Scott Miller. “Breakthrough cases, we know, everybody knows somebody, but they’re still a rare incident and what we are seeing is that vaccines do what they are intended to do.”
At last count, 220,188 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine have been administered in the county.
“No vaccines are 100% effective, but they are effective at doing what they are intended to do.”
According to McKnight, the new COVID-19 variant, Omicron, should have people concerned.
On Wednesday, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported the first cases of Omicron in the U.S.
