BLOOMINGTON – Municipal election results included a new mayor in Bloomington and a successful re-election bid for the mayor of Normal.

City of Bloomington

With all precincts reported, Mboka Mwilambwe (4,455) defeated Mike Straza (4,248) and Jackie Gunderson (2,780) to become the next mayor of Bloomington. Mwilambwe, who becomes Bloomington’s first black mayor, is the city’s longest serving alderman representing Ward 3 since 2011. Incumbent Mayor Tari Renner decided not to seek a third term.

In Ward 3, Sheila Montney out-polled Willie Holton Halbert 1,260-593. In Ward 5, Nick Becker out-distanced Patrick Lawler 723-523. Mollie Ward (420) defeated Kelby Cumpston (263) in Ward 7. A tight race in Ward 9 with Tom Crumpler (951) just inching by Jim Fruin (932). Jamie Mathy gets another term in Ward 1 as he ran unopposed.

Town of Normal

Incumbent Mayor Chris Koos (4,396) declared victory over second time opponent Marc Tiritilli (4,008). Koos, who narrowly won by 11 votes in 2017, has been the mayor of Normal since 2003.

The three council seats were apparently won by incumbents Kevin McCarthy (3,712), Chemberly Cummings (2,941) and Scott Preston (2,941). The closest challengers were David Paul Blumenshine (2,803) and A.J. Zimmerman (2,639).
