BLOOMINGTON – Seven McLean County businesses are the first to receive what amounts to free money from local government to help them survive the COVID-19 pandemic.

A couple of months ago, the McLean County Board approved the Targeted Development Loan program, offering small businesses hundreds of thousands of dollars in forgivable loans that don’t have to be paid back.

The money can be used to boost businesses’ online sales, which has become especially important because customers worried about COVID’s spread might be reluctant to make in-person purchases.

The Bloomington-Normal Economic Development Council is administering the program. Wednesday, the EDC’s president and CEO Patrick Hoban announced the first seven recipients to receive the public money.

  • Meltdown Creative – 409 East Washington Street, Bloomington ($20,000)
  • Coffee Hound – 915 East Washington Street, Bloomington ($10,000)
  • Finish Line – 138 Veto Street, Chenoa ($10,000)
  • Ohm Fit Active Wear – 102 West North Street, Normal ($10,000)
  • Papa G’s – 204 South Seminary Street, Downs ($10,000)
  • Proving Ground – 1503 East College Avenue, Normal ($10,000)
  • Tony’s Tacos – 105 West Front Street, Bloomington ($10,000)

After this first round, Hoban said $525,000 remains available to eligible businesses.

The county board previously set up a program offering each business up to $5,000 to be paid back with a 1% interest rate, but it generated little enthusiasm.

Hoban said small businesses were much more interested in receiving larger dollar amounts with no interest.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

By Mike Matejka Because of COVID, there is no Labor Day Parade this year.  It’s always a great event for our everyday workers to march proudly down the street and enjoys the festive crowd. If there had been a parade, this year’s Labor Day theme was to be “150 years of struggle: your right to vote.” …

Is federal mobilization the answer?

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
