BLOOMINGTON – A former Normal Police officer is likely to change his plea to guilty on charges he stole $12,000 from the home of a drug overdose victim.
A plea hearing for Brian Williams, 47, is set for November 20 in McLean County Court, an indication that Williams’ lawyer and the state’s attorney’s office have been negotiating a possible guilty plea, according to our news partner HOI ABC.
Williams resigned from the department in February after 18-years as a police officer, according to Police Chief Rick Bleichner.
Authorities said Williams was one of the officers responding to a home on November 25 of last year to check on a person who potentially overdosed.
The person died, but a family member reported the cash was missing after officers left the residence.
Illinois State Police arrested Williams after he reportedly arranged to return the money to the relative at a Pontiac gas station.
Williams has been free on bond after prosecutors charged him with theft and official misconduct.
