BLOOMINGTON – Given the close Presidential election and tight races in battleground states, the next president could become a Supreme Court decision.

According to Illinois State University Politics and Government Associate Professor Dr. Kerri Milita, the final results would be a Supreme Court decision like the Presidential election in 2000.

“They rule on the constitutionality of, its a balancing game between ‘look we need a President. We need to figure out who won.’ The constitutional right of every vote that was cast to count. So that’s going to be the balancing game in the court system.”

In a speech in the early morning hours of Wednesday morning, President Trump said he has his lawyers ready when the case goes to court.

Additionally, Dr. Milita told WJBC’s Scott Miller that a recount is possible if a candidate feels the action is necessary.

“It’s possible, and it’s within a candidate’s right to request a recount fortunately/unfortunately depending upon who asks for it. But it’s their right to ask for it, and in theory, every vote should count; every vote that made legitimately should count. I don’t think it will come to that, but it could, it could.”

Dr. Milita said she expects an official result of the Presidential election within the week.
