SPRINGFIELD – Who’s going to pay the rent?
“The economic pain brought on by COVID-19 has impacted every Illinoisan,” Gov. JB Pritzker said Monday, “but no one has carried a burden larger than those least able to weather a financial hardship.”
The governor announced the Emergency Rental Assistance program, which is through the Illinois Housing Development Authority, of which Kristin Faust is executive director.
“Illinois renters whose households have experienced a loss of income due to COVID-19 will be able to apply for rent relief,” said Faust. “This assistance is a grant; it does not need to be repaid.”
Faust says some restrictions apply – such as income and when you fell behind on your rent. A program for homeowners in similar straits will be announced in two weeks.
