SPRINGFIELD – A local Congressman says, don’t expect the latest coronavirus recovery bill to go anywhere.
U.S. Rep. Rodney Davis (R-Taylorville) is not enthused about the Speaker’s latest idea.
“Even journalists are reporting this bill has a zero chance of becoming law. It’s a messaging bill that Speaker (Nancy) Pelosi (D-Calif.) put out. It’s a $3 trillion wish list of a lot of her Democratic priorities,” Davis said. “It flies in the face of the advice that they have been giving us.”
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.)is similarly uninterested.
Davis says the pandemic is highlighting the cost of health coverage. “We’ve seen our economy go from one of the best in our lifetime, the lowest sustained unemployment rate in our lifetime,” said Davis, “and now we are seeing unemployment at levels we haven’t seen since the Great Depression. In fact, I am working to address COBRA,” the higher-priced insurance people can buy once they’re unemployed.
Davis says, rather than debate Pelosi’s “unserious” bill, how about protecting nurses from furloughs?
