CHICAGO – Attorneys for former U.S. House Speaker Dennis Hastert say they’re gearing up for trial, but first, they’ll try getting the case against Hastert thrown out.
Hastert himself wasn’t at the Chicago hearing on the charges he structured bank withdrawals to avoid reporting requirements, and then lied to FBI about it. But Hastert lawyer Thomas Green said he plans to file several motions to break down the prosecutors’ arguments in the case, including one to dismiss it entirely.
Green added that the defense is preparing for go to trial, though no date was set during the hearing.
Green also blasted leaks in the case, saying reports that Hastert’s withdrawals were hush money paid to cover up sexual misconduct during his time as a high school wrestling coach have put “an 800-pound gorilla in the case.”
Lawyers are not expected back in court for this case until October 20.
