WASHINGTON – McLean County native Kelly Loeffler was officially sworn in Monday as Georgia’s newest U.S. Senator.
Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp picked Loeffler last month to replace Johnny Isakson, who retired at the end of 2019 due to health issues.
Vice President Mike Pence administered the oath of office to Loeffler on the floor of the Senate. She is just the second woman to represent Georgia in the U.S. Senate.
Loeffler previously served as an executive at a financial services firm in Atlanta, but left the post after her Senate appointment, according to CNN. She is a co-owner of the WNBA’s Atlanta Dream.
A Republican, Loeffler has described herself as “a lifelong conservative. Pro-Second Amendment. Pro-military. Pro-wall. And pro-Trump.”
She grew up in rural Stanford and attended Olympia High School. She went on to earn a bachelor’s degree from the University of Illinois and a master’s from Depaul University.
