BLOOMINGTON – Homelessness and the impact it has on kids is one focus for a new District 87 School Board member.
Kiasha Henry was appointed to the board last week after the resignation of Mary Yount.
This is Henry’s second stint as a board member, previously serving from Feb. 2016-April 2017, but lost in her re-election bid. Henry said there are several areas she wants to address.
“Right now one of my focuses is how homelessness affects children and their performance in school,” said Henry. “What got me interested was an article about Chicago schools having 16,000 homeless children. It got me thinking we have to be experiencing some of the same problems here in McLean County.”
“I’m also really dedicated to outreach and making sure we are providing the kids all they need in school, but also outside of school,” Henry added.
Henry graduated from Bloomington High School and has kids currently in the district.
