BLOOMINGTON – McLean County prosecutors allege that Kirk Zimmerman killed his wife in November of 2014 out of greed and hate.

Attorneys made their opening statements Monday morning in Zimmerman’s trail, which is expected to last four to six weeks.

News partner WMBD-TV reports prosecutors stated the clear motive for him killing his former wife Pam Zimmerman stemmed from a delinquent child support payment amount of $3,900. They went on to say they have more than 60 witnesses that will back up those claims and will provide forensic evidence that will easily show Kirk committed the murder.

Pam died of multiple gunshot wounds at her office on Bloomington’s east side.

The defense rebuked the claims made by the prosecution and painted a picture of Kirk as the family man, saying all three of his kids will be testifying in favor of Kirk to show how much of a loving person he was.

The defense also said there is no way Kirk would kill his former wife and the mother of his children over an amount as small as $3,900 because he had a well paying State Farm job, no credit card debt and had savings totaling more than $30,000.

The jury has been dismissed until the afternoon session, where the prosecution will begin providing evidence and calling up their witnesses.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

By Mike Matejka Because of COVID, there is no Labor Day Parade this year.  It’s always a great event for our everyday workers to march proudly down the street and enjoys the festive crowd. If there had been a parade, this year’s Labor Day theme was to be “150 years of struggle: your right to vote.” …

Is federal mobilization the answer?

Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
