BLOOMINGTON – A local lawmaker in the Illinois House is co-sponsoring a constitutional amendment to remove politicians from the legislative map drawing process.
State Rep. Dan Brady (R-Bloomington) and all 44 GOP House members signed on to sponsor the constitutional amendment. It would create the Independent Redistricting Commission that would file a redistricting plan for Legislative and Representative Districts.
Brady told WJBC’s Scott Laughlin he’s optimistic because Gov. JB Pritzker has claimed he wants to institute fair maps.
“He did during the campaign say this was something he was supportive of,” said Brady. “This may be the first test to see how things are going to change, so we’ll see how the Governor reacts.”
The amendment is led by Minority Leader Jim Durkin.
