Mitsubishi announces major recall

DETROIT – Mitsubishi Motors has announced a major recall after reports of five people being injured by faulty sun visors.

The recalls involve some 460,000 cars which were all made at the plant in Normal more than a decade ago. According to paperwork filed with the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, some models of the Eclipse sport coupe and Eclipse Spyders had visors which hit air bags. The recall also involves some models of the Chrysler Sebring and Dodge Stratus which Mitsubishi made for Chrysler.

Five people claim they suffered facial injuries, two lost sight in one eye.

The vehicles can be taken back to the dealer to get a tether strap added to the visor at no cost. the sun visor holder will also be replaced on the Eclipse Spyder.

A Mitsubishi spokesman declined comment.
