BLOOMINGTON – The Supreme Court is expected to rule on two prominent issues in the next few days. Legalization of same sex marriage and the affordable care act will be at the forefront of discussions.
Meghan Leonard. political science professor at Illinois State University, said what we can expect from the Affordable Care Act ruling.
“What’s not going to happen is that the Affordable Care Act will be wiped out, that’s not a possibility,” said Leonard. “The questions is, whether or not in order to get a subsidy when you buy health insurance, you have to buy the insurance through an exchange created through the state.”
Leonard discussed the local effects of the legalization of same sex marriage.
“What most people don’t think will happen is that they would remove same sex marriage in places where it already exists,” Leonard continued. “So for the most part, Illinois specifically, and other state that already have same sex marriage won’t necessarily be affected.”
Most constitutional scholars believe that the Court will rule same sex marriage bans to be unconstitutional, leading to the legalization of same sex marriages in the United States.
Leonard added this very well could be the last word in the seemingly endless debate.
“The Supreme Court essentially has the final say,” she continued. ” What they would be granting here is an equal protection. They very, very rarely would overturn their own equal protection case.”.
Same sex marriages have been legal in Illinois since June 1, 2014.
