BLOOMINGTON – The Keeping Families Together campaign concluded its 24 hour fast in front of the Bloomington City Hall Monday night with songs and prayer.
About 70 people ranging from ages 11 to 75 fasted in support of the proposed Welcoming City Ordinance and in solidarity with undocumented families.
YWCA’s Jenn Carrillo said the importance of the fast is an issue that ‘spans generations’.
“In history, fasts have been used to bring the attention back to an issue and to create a sense of urgency,” Carrillo said. “We need our city council members to feel the same level of urgency that our undocumented community members are feeling.”
Carrillo also encouraged those who fasted to use public comment during the Bloomington City Hall council meeting to share why they did so.
“It’s about morality. It’s the moral thing to do to pass the Welcoming City Ordinance.”
