NORMAL – The Normal Rotary Club has kicked off its annual Coats for Kids drive, its annual effort to provide winter wear for children in need in the Unit 5 school district and beyond.

Last year, the club bought 1,102 new coats and other winter wear. The need continues every year, according to Connie Gentry, who chairs the club’s annual campaign. Most of the winter wear goes to students in Unit 5 who do not have adequate coats, gloves and hats for cold winter weather.

Gentry and other members of Normal Rotary’s Coats for Kids committee scour local stores to find bargains for coats and other winter wear. Some businesses donate gift cards to the effort, and others offer extra discounts because of Normal Rotary Club’s volume of purchases. The average cost of coats purchased through Coats for Kids last year was about $12.78, Gentry said.

To make a tax-deductible donation to Coats for Kids, send a check made out to Normal Rotary Foundation, P.O. Box 333, Normal, Ill., 61761.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
