BLOOMINGTON – Two elected leaders who don’t always see eye-to-eye agree David Hales helped dig Bloomington out of a deep financial hole after becoming city manager almost nine years ago.
Hales, who’s leaving his post to become Joliet’s city manager, was honored at a reception Tuesday night at the Bloomington Center for the Performing Arts.
Mayor Tari Renner said the city is now in much better shape because of Hales and his staff. Alderman David Sage said Hales’ efforts were “simply amazing.”
Sage thanked Hales for his humility and said he was not afraid to say no.
“Elected officials like me and other stakeholders, we usually don’t like to hear no. So, thank you because I believed you were looking out for us,” Sage said.
Hales said his tenure was marked by some challenging and great times.
“Physical things can be built. They deteriorate, but one thing that never goes away is the great memories, and the love and the friendships that you develop with people,” said Hales.
Hales’ top assistant, Steve Rasmussen, is now acting city manager, and indicated he wants to be in the running to become Hales permanent replacement.
