GALESBURG, Ill. (WMBD) — The city of Galesburg made the appointment of an acting police chief permanent, City Hall announced on Wednesday.

The move means Kevin Legate, who had been the acting chief since March, can now drop the word “acting” from his title. He took over for Russell Idle who was put on administrative leave in March for allegedly violating the city’s sexual harassment and discrimination policies.

He was subsequently dismissed a few weeks later, said Cathy St. George, a city spokesperson.

“I am honored to have been selected as Galesburg Police Chief,” Legate said. “It’s a privilege to lead an outstanding staff, and I am profoundly grateful for their hard work and commitment.

“I look forward to guiding the department to its full potential, ensuring Galesburg is a community where all citizens feel safe and confidently rely on the Police Department to serve with integrity, transparency, and dedication,” he said.

Legate had also served as a deputy chief since July 2023, and he brings a “wealth of experience” to the new role, St. George said.

“Chief Legate has done an exceptional job leading the Galesburg Police Department through a challenging transition, solidifying his place as a leader of outstanding character and judgment,” said City Manager Eric Hanson. “Throughout his dedicated career with the Galesburg Police Department, he has earned the confidence of his community and colleagues, and I am certain he will continue to excel in this new role.”

Legate graduated with a degree in Law Enforcement and Justice Administration from Western Illinois University before continuing to complete senior level training at various institutions, she said.

He began his law enforcement career with the Rock Island Police Department before coming to Galesburg in 2001. At Galesburg, Legate successfully rose through the ranks.

“I am honored to have been selected as Galesburg Police Chief,” he said. “It’s a privilege to lead an outstanding staff, and I am profoundly grateful for their hard work and commitment. I look forward to guiding the department to its full potential, ensuring Galesburg is a community where all citizens feel safe and confidently rely on the Police Department to serve with integrity, transparency, and dedication.”

Legates’ more than 25 years of experience in law enforcement has given him the necessary attributes and education required of an “exemplary police chief,” St. George said.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

By Mike Matejka Because of COVID, there is no Labor Day Parade this year.  It’s always a great event for our everyday workers to march proudly down the street and enjoys the festive crowd. If there had been a parade, this year’s Labor Day theme was to be “150 years of struggle: your right to vote.” …

Is federal mobilization the answer?

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
