SPRINGFIELD – The GED is getting a new name come January.
Starting in 2023, the GED certificate will be called the State of Illinois High School diploma says Community College Board spokesperson Matt Berry.
“This is important because often a high school equivalency can have a stigma that it’s less than or not in fact equivalent to the work and knowledge that a student with a high school diploma has. That is far from the truth,” said Berry.
Students will have to meet the same requirements in order to pass.
Anyone currently holding a GED certificate can request a replacement with the new name at their local regional office of education.
