BLOOMINGTON – The Bloomington City Council has signed off on a deal offering tax breaks for a former alderman who wants to expand his downtown business and create space for two other retailers.

The council voted unanimously Monday night for an agreement in which local tax incentives would fund approximately 17% of Jamie Mathy’s project.

The former alderman and his wife plan to move their business, Red Raccoon Games, next door to the unoccupied Main Street Plaza and rent space for two other businesses, which must be new to the city for Mathy to receive the incentives.

Mathy would get back 50% of local sales taxes generated from his board game store, and all sales taxes from the two other stores that move there. Mathy would also receive all of the city’s portion of property taxes generated by the redeveloped property. The rebates will stop at $196,900, or after six years, whichever comes first.

Mathy’s name wasn’t mentioned during the council’s discussion, but Alderwoman Donna Boelen indicated she has some reservations about the deal.

“I’m not comfortable with the 100% rebate on a retail store for six years,” Boelen said. Still, she voted for package.

Mathy plans to invest $1.6 million for the project that aims to breathe new life in a building that has been vacant for about 14 years.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

By Mike Matejka Because of COVID, there is no Labor Day Parade this year.  It’s always a great event for our everyday workers to march proudly down the street and enjoys the festive crowd. If there had been a parade, this year’s Labor Day theme was to be “150 years of struggle: your right to vote.” …

Is federal mobilization the answer?

Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
