SPRINGFIELD – It takes a love of the environment – and a willingness to give and receive second-hand gifts – to search for refurbished electronics this gift-giving season.
The Illinois Public Interest Research Group is out with “Fixed for the Holidays,” a guide to spreading holiday cheer while saving electronics from the landfill.
“We want to encourage people to consider buying refurbished,” said Abe Scarr, Illinois PIRG director. “This is a greener choice, because we are not producing as much electronic waste. It’s good for your wallet, because they’re cheaper.”
Scarr also suggests buying “experiences,” rather than “stuff,” through another PIRG guide called “Buy Less, Give More.” Giving sports or concert tickets or, say, a gift certificate for a massage can be just as green, and at least as enjoyable.
