NORMAL – A new indoor practice facility could be coming to Illinois State University; however, the school’s Athletic Director says a timeline is not yet set.

The facility, which would compliment Horton Field House, is a priority for new Athletic Director Kyle Brennan.

“I’ll tell you something, if it happens 10-years out or 15-years out or if the question will it happen, then I’m going to be out of a job. I’ve told everyone that’s my priority come in here, and so we’re pushing as hard as we can to get that done. Been having some great success on the fundraising front. (I’m) just working with the university on making sure that we’re following proper procedure.”

In March, the university received a $2 million anonymous donation to kickstart the fundraising effort that would allow for teams like football to practice indoors.

“There’s a lot of you know; I wouldn’t call it red tape, but a lot of processes you have to go through on the university campus to get things done,” Brennan told WJBC’s Scott Miller. “But at the end of the day, we’re out there charging hard; we’re asking for the dollars that we need. We’re going to get this project done come hell or high water.

(I) can’t give you the exact timing because some of that is out of my control because you are working with different partners, and you are working with campus. But, I can tell you that every day that it’s on my mind. And everyday, I’m pushing somebody or something or asking someone to help us with that project. I can promise you that that project is going to get done while I’m here, and it’s going to be fantastic.”

With a change coming to the President position come Friday, Brennan said he would be working with the new president to ensure the project is completed.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

By Mike Matejka Because of COVID, there is no Labor Day Parade this year.  It’s always a great event for our everyday workers to march proudly down the street and enjoys the festive crowd. If there had been a parade, this year’s Labor Day theme was to be “150 years of struggle: your right to vote.” …

Is federal mobilization the answer?

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
