SPRINGFIELD – Fans of term limits have some good news here.
A ten-year limit on all four legislative leaders has passed a House committee, though the current leaders already endorse it..
The bill, which codifies the rules into state law, is sponsored by State Rep. Anthony DeLuca (D-Chicago Heights).
“We heard the word historic quite a bit when leadership term limits were approved and this is really taking it to an entirely new level theres a lot of interest in doing something like this,” said DeLuca.
The previous speaker, Mike Madigan, had no interest in doing something like this. House Democrats elected him speaker 18 times and minority leader once since 1983. The current leaders already endorse this, now it is on its way to becoming state law.
HB 642 has passed the House Executive Committee.
