BLOOMINGTON – Earlier this week, Eric West was named the new fire chief for the City of Bloomington, but now City Manager Tim Gleason will turn his attention to the position of police chief.
Gleason selected Dan Donath as the city’s police chief in 2019, but he retired last summer for personal reasons. Gleason says the search hasn’t started due to COVID-19 and the reason for holding off is to allow for more traditional public input.

“While I could have gone straight to the recruitment, it was not going to allow for that public interaction that I envisioned,” Gleason told WJBC’s Scott Miller. “Like I wanted when we selected Dan Donath as police chief. Where you go through the process, but then you get down to the point of two candidates, and I want that public face-to-face interaction if we’re able to do it.”
Interim police chief Greg Scott was also willing to serve in the role for an extended period, according to Gleason. He says the recruitment process should begin in mid to late May.
