Spack: Decision to opt out was not based on record

NORMAL – Illinois State football head coach Brock Spack says the decision to opt out of the rest of the spring season was not based on the team’s 1-3 start.

Spack told WJBC’s Scott Miller he would’ve made the same decision even if the team started the season 4-0.

“Absolutely, I know that is easy for me to say, but I absolutely would,” said Spack. “I can see why a lot of people in the fall didn’t play in the bowl games and opted out. If this was the fall and people would say what would you do, well that is the fall and the kids would have an offseason to recover. These kids don’t have an offseason right now.”

The FCS and Missouri Valley Football Conference will play back-to-back seasons with a normal fall schedule this August.

The decision means ISU won’t play its scheduled spring games with South Dakota State, Southern Illinois, North Dakota, and Missouri State.

Two of those games were scheduled to be played at Hancock Stadium. The ISU Athletics Department says those who have purchased tickets for the remaining two home games will be refunded.
