BLOOMINGTON – Bloomington’s State Farm Insurance said Monday it is cutting auto rates by an average of 13.7 percent for Illinois policyholders because the COVID-19 pandemic is keeping motorists off the road, and there are fewer accidents.

Nationwide, the company said customers are saving about $2.2 billion, reducing rates an average 11 percent in the U.S., according to our news partner HOI ABC.

For its 2.8 million Illinois policyholders, the rate reduction will save them $320 million, the company said.

“Current State Farm driving data and claims experience show a considerable decline in miles driven and fewer accidents,” State Farm Senior Vice President Rob Stewart said in a prepared statement.

“As a result, we’re looking for ways to continue supporting our Illinois customers while we monitor and adjust to trends,” Stewart also said.

The rate cut applies to current customers when they renew their policies, in addition to new and returning customers, the company said.

State Farm is also increasing its Drive Safe & Save discount to 10 percent, in which policyholders can save more based on their driving behaviors.

On April 9, State Farm announced it was returning a $2 billion dividend to customers as part of its Good Neighbor Relief Program.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

Is federal mobilization the answer?

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
