GOODFIELD – The 9-year-old boy charged with killing five of his family members in a fire had a virtual custody hearing Wednesday.
The hearing happened via Zoom, a video chat website.
The boy accused in the homicide investigation allegedly set his family’s mobile home on fire April 6, last year. Five people trapped inside, died of smoke inhalation: Kathryn Murray, 69; Jason Wall; 34; Rose Alwood, 2; Daemeon Wall, 2; and Ariel Wall, 1.
Wednesday, a Woodford County judge ruled the boy will stay with his paternal grandparents, who are acting as his foster parents right now.
His father has been pursuing custody of his son, but has been unable to receive an assessment because of COVID-19 restrictions.
Judge Charles Feeney did approve the father’s request for four hours per week of unsupervised visits, but the final decision on that will be up to DCFS.
The boy’s next day in court for the murder case is set for May 11.
