NORMAL – Special Olympics Illinois has officially canceled the state summer games in Bloomington-Normal due to the coronavirus.
President and CEO Dave Breen put out a message on Facebook.
“We know this is disappointing for the entire Special Olympics Illinois family, but the health and safety of our athletes, volunteers, staff, and partners is the organization’s foremost priority,” said Breen in the video message.
The games were supposed to be played in the Twin-Cities June 12-14. The Special Olympics Illinois team says its working to plan athlete-centric sports festivals when it’s safe to return to competition.
Meanwhile, the organization says its creating new programming for its social media channels during this time. More information is available here.
