SPRINGFIELD – The report card for Illinois is some good and some bad, in a newly-released study on government efficiency. 

Researcher Arwi Kriz of the Institute for Illinois Public Finance at the University of Illinois Springfield says Illinois is near the bottom of the fifty states in transportation. How could the Player with Railroads and Freight Handler to the Nation be inefficient in transportation?

“We could be more selective in terms of capital project selection and project acquisition; we can set costs, because these are big ticket items and the cost of borrowing (would) be lower,” says Kriz.

Her study’s most efficient areas for Illinois – higher education, environment and housing, and infrastructure.

The university says she used a scientific methodology to measure states’ production against costs and headcount.

“It is more detailed in terms of output, in terms of quantity and quality,” says Kriz. “I think we have some more meat and context that can help the practitioner and the public get some insight — better than just a number, like the per capita spending.”
